GORDON KENNEDY’S
 SUMMER BAND PROGRAM 2008

The summer band program is in full swing, and groups are rehearsing every week in anticipation of the big show on August 31st at the Modesto Civic Center Plaza. This year promises to be the biggest and best show we have ever done, with 12 bands, professional sound and lights on the big stage.

This week the kids had their first clinic covering the rhythm section and how the guitars and bass fit into the drummers patterns. Demonstrations conducted by Gordon Kennedy and featuring drummer Dave Hawks covered many musical styles and performance techniques.  The clinic held on Saturday July 19th had the store packed to the brim with students and parents during the 2 hour event. After the demonstrations each group had a chance to play a sample of their work for Dave at which time he offered his critique of the rhythm section and guitar parts. All the bands learned something new and listened intently to Dave’s sage advice.

As a side note, the band “Zephyr”, ages 8 to 12, had a great opportunity to play live for the grand opening of Tracy Music Center’s new studios in Tracy. The event was filmed live by Good Day Sacramento’s TV crew on June 20th. During their performance they received an invitation to appear in the TV studio and play live on air for the July 20th show. The kids did a fantastic job and were featured participants in the two hour show. What a great opportunity to be on TV. Too cool !!!

Last years Horizon Band Program was a huge success. Every year, this program brings out the best in our students and their accomplishments throughout the year. A special thanks to Gordon Kennedy, Mark Hatchfield and Henry Morones for their hard work and extra time they took to insure a quality event. Everyone had a great time despite a few unforeseen complications.
This program is a testament to our goal of “cultivating tomorrows well rounded musicians”.  We pride ourselves in our teaching staff and their abilities to connect with our students in a way that provides music instruction and social education all while the students learn the concepts of working in a live band environment. Some of these groups will stay together to perform at local clubs and coffee shops in the area.
Last year, for the first time, we had an adult group perform. Some of the parents commented when they saw them take the stage they thought they were a professional band, not a student band. I have to admit, they seemed a little more nervous than the kids but did a excellent job on stage and are sure to be here next year.
